History
Back in 1860, the Holy Ghost Fathers started rescuing slaves from Zanzibar and later moved their missionary work into East Africa. They opened hospitals and schools to teach people different marketable skills which they could use to grow themselves. By the 19th Century, some parts of Lavington was known as St. Austin’s Mission which was used for coffee farming and converted to a successful commercial plantation
As more people started searching for spiritual growth, the Fathers opened St. Austin’s Catholic Church and schools, built on Catholic foundation. These schools include Strathmore School, Loreto Convent Msongari School, and St. Mary’s School. This explains why Lavington is somewhat of a spiritual neighbourhood.
